The Godfather - [15/10]

This book is just simply amazing to me. From start to finish it presents a beautifully crafted story that is just flawless. I loved the insight of the culture of the mafia and the respect that they have for everyone and the formalities they follow, the incredibly intricate characters and relationships they have, the Shakespearean storytelling and conflicts that they face. There is so much in this book that can not be fully captured by the movie. The section of Michael Corleone in Italy, roaming and living his life and then falling in love with Apollonia, that little section is probably up there with my favourite scenes from a book ever. I can not talk enough about this book, I would say if you have to read any book, read this one.  Author: Tom Puzo

IT - [10/10]

This is the only book that made me feel actually scared turning it's pages. I literally turned a page and read a line somewhere in the book and gasped. I'm not kidding. This book is very, very long, Stephen King gets in a habit of giving the backstory of every little thing in the story. However, if you have the patience and the effort to read (which I definitely do), you will find a creepy, terrifying, interesting and just overall great story. The book shows an even more evil side to Pennywise that the movie seems to not capture, more than just a jump-scare, he strikes psychological fear. This is one of King's best works. Even as weird as the ending is.  Author: Stephen King

The Green Mile - [8.5/10]

The best way I can describe this book is that is feels nostalgic. Not nostalgic to my own childhood or to past times, it just feels like the best way to describe it. This could be because of the back and forth that the novel does, as it switches between the main character as an old man in the nursing home and his time as block supervisor in the jail. The book is very unique, the touch of supernatural with the mouse, the shocking (no pun intended) execution scene that was written and described so vividly. King again creates such emotionally deep characters that are so easy to empathise with, this makes for a nice light read that is pretty feel good for the most part. Author: Stephen King

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - [6.5/10]

Tarantino's style of movie doesn't translate well to the paper. His movies are all over the place, scenes and storylines intertwined but you're drawn in and engaged the whole time. You can sort of see the vision with the book but it falls flat a bit as it does not have the other things that keep you engaged in a Tarantino film. On the other hand (but not too much of a surprise) his imagery is phenomenal and his scenes in the book come to life in my head, he evokes feelings and images great, its just the storyline that is very disconnected. Also, at least 5 times he flexes his knowledge of 1900s actors and film, which is mad but I don't know a thing of what he's talking about. This would be really cool to read first then watch the movie, a lot of the time I did think 'damn, I wish I was watching the movie right now'.  Also, putting the end scene of the movie as an aside in the middle of the book was pretty lame, that was the best part of the movie and having ...

Dune - [6/10]

Dune had potential for me, but fell off in the second half of the book. It is a dystopian, science fiction book where a planet contains a certain spice that is the most valuable asset in the whole galaxy as it is a drug that has special abilities. Who controls the planet has major control of the rest of the population, and the story follows Paul Atreides whose family inherited the planet. There was definitely really cool concepts and imagery throughout the book, the best being the random walking on the sand to not produce rhythmic footsteps to alert the worms of their presence as well as the whole concept of the indigenous people of the planet. I was lost in this book however, not in a good way. I got confused with characters and their intentions at points, and what the point of what they were doing most of the time. Mostly, the way it was written kind of bored me and made it more of a task for me to finish than anything. The story was very interesting though, and the movie that ...

Normal People - [6/10]

I'll make it clear that I may be biased in this as I've never had a proper relationship or fallen in love before, but this was a very frustrating story. I think it was written beautifully, the emotions evoked and the imagery / feelings that were described were great, but the actual plot and the characters decisions were silly to me. I'm taking a very logical approach to a romance novel, but I feel like there was a lot of bullshit that could be sorted out with just a couple of sentences. The ending was also so unsatisfying, and yes, I fully understand that this book is about life, and life doesn't have a happy ending and everything doesn't turn out how we want to etc... but I go to a book or a story to escape that for a bit, not to be reminded of it. That could be the intention of this book, or even the genre which I am fairly new to. I am keen to read more romance novels, as the perspectives of relationships and the dynamics within them was quite interesting, espe...
